The traditional Japanese musical instrument shamisen, which was part of the kabuki performance, is played by a prostitute. A large part of the appeal of Japanese kabuki theatre in the early Edo period was the mocking and suggestive themes that were performed by many theatre troupes; this appeal was enhanced by the fact that many performers also engaged in prostitution. Kabuki was a common form of entertainment in the red-light districts of Japan.
