This patch is inspired by a woodblock print by one of the most famous painters of the Edo period, Utagawa Kuniyoshi. One of the last Japanese artists of the ukiyo-e (woodblock art) genre, Kuniyoshi was known for his depictions of historical and mythical scenes. He combined the two in his depiction of the tenth-century Princess Takiyoshi, who summons a demon in the form of a gigantic skeleton to intimidate the ruler Ōya no Mitsukuni, whose family killed her father. This scene became the inspiration for the traditional depiction of the Japanese yokai (demon) Gashadokuro.
